What’s going on Zach Crawford here and in this video we are going to talk about how to build an online business while you have a full time job.

Over the last several years I’ve been asked this question over and over again and sometimes people are even debating if they should just quit their job and go all in on building their online business.

So what I’m going to do is share a few tips with you that I believe will be very helpful to give you some perspective on how to actually build your online business with the least amount of stress and make sure you build a business that is sustainable that will actually be able to provide you the type of lifestyle and freedom you want.

I’ve not had a job in over 7 years so I think I can give you some helpful tips and share with you a few things I would do differently if I could go back to when I was just getting started.

1.) Don’t Quit Your Job

One of the worst pieces of advice I’ve seen people give is to just quit your job and go for it. For most people this is absolutely horrible advice because it’s going to create massive amounts of stress, drain your savings and possibly put you in debt trying to keep yourself afloat.

Often times people will see or hear my story where I just quit my job, went to the Philippines with only $12,000 and became a millionaire. If you’ve watched my documentary on my channel I do my best to show that it wasn’t just a fairytale and there was a lot of up’s and down’s to get to where I’m at today.

Some people have watched that video and took the message wrong and they thought well “Zach did it, so can I”.

I remember years ago one guy following me was motivated by my story, he quit his job on impulse with only $3000 and went to the Philippines, then messaged me two months later asking me for help. By help, I mean he wanted me to loan him money because he got himself in a bad spot financially.

What I don’t share enough in my videos is that when I quit my 60-80 hour job, I also replaced it by doing work for clients and building an outsourcing business to pay my bills and give me income to invest into my online business.

If you quit your job what makes you think you’re going to be able to figure it out if you couldn’t figure it out with a job? For most people they probably won’t, they will burn through their savings and put themselves in a very stressful situation.

If you’re someone with more responsibilities and you have a family, this is a very risky move that could put stress on your relationship and put your family in a very rough spot.

You don’t want to quit your job until you’ve got a reliable, predictable and consistent income coming in.

My personal recommendation is to never quit your job until you’re making at the minimum the same amount you make at your job, but a smarter move is to double your income with your online business.

So if you make say $4000 per month at your day job then I wouldn’t consider quitting until I was making a minimum of $4000-$5000 per month from my online business.

Ideally, if you double your income from your online business this is much smarter. A business has expenses and you need to be able to not only pay your personal bills, but you need money to cover on going expenses to grow your business.

Which brings me to my next tip which is to smash that subscribe button. In all seriousness if you’re new to the channel and haven’t subscribed make sure to subscribe if you get value from this video.

2.) Manage Your Money

If you want to be a successful entrepreneur you have to learn how to manage your money very well. Most people have a foolish idea about business that you just make a lot of money and life is easy, but that is the farthest thing from the truth.

I learned this lesson the hard way because I never knew anyone who makes the type of money I do. Most people make money at their job and they find a way to spend it on things they don’t need, but as a business owner you have to be very savvy with your finances.

It’s much easier to practice this skill while you have a job that has a steady paycheck you can count on.

Which I want to point out something here. I get many people who come to be saying Zach I hate my job and I want to quit. You should realize your job is a blessing because it provides you with a steady paycheck you can count on.

I used to absolutely hate my job. I pretty much lived at the post office 7 days a week and many weeks clocking over 80 hours. During the holidays I even slept there overnight.

I wasn’t gifted with the blessing of being able to quit my job on my own terms or I would have stayed at my job so I could invest every spare dime I had to grow my business faster.

I had roughly $50,000 in debt from a drunk driver hitting me and eventually the creditors stepped in and they were going to garnish my wages.

So I had the choice to gamble everything and go for this entrepreneur dream or just stay at my job and be miserable working endless hours and barely able to pay my bills because they would garnish my wages.

So I sold everything I owned and took off to the Philippines. This is not the type of thing I suggest most people do because it was extremely stressful and most people would have probably tanked from the pressure.

Your job is a blessing even if you hate it. When you work for yourself you are responsible to produce results. It doesn’t work like a job where you work 8 hours and get 8 hours of pay. You will have to do a lot of work in the beginning to get your business off the ground that you don’t get paid for.

This is why I suggest staying at your job until you double your income. The longer you stay at your job the easier it’s going to be on you.

A business requires you to invest in the business and yourself. You will need to invest in courses and training to learn how to build the business.

You will need to invest in tools to help you automate parts of the business or necessary tools that are required to run the business.

You will eventually want to invest in a virtual assistant to help you do tasks that you either can’t do or shouldn’t be doing so you can focus on higher leverage tasks in your business.

Having a job with a stable income is going to allow you to build your business faster and it will be less stressful because you don’t have to worry about making money fast to survive.

If you’re someone who doesn’t even have a job then the first step is to get a job so you have income coming in to pay your bills and then use the extra for building your business.

Building a business when you don’t have a job or any income at all is going to put you at a severe disadvantage because your operating out of desperation just to survive and pay your bills. This is not the right frame of mind to be building a business.

A business takes time, energy, commitment and money. If you think you’re going to find some secret method you can make tons of money in 30 days it’s never going to happen. If you’re just getting started there is a learning curve and investment to be made and your job is going to really help make this process much easier.

Now let’s say you’re the person who has a job, but your pretty much living paycheck to paycheck.

This means you’re going to have to make some sacrifices and budget your money better. This is the part no one likes to hear, but it has to be done.

You may need to cut out the Starbucks coffee, cancel the cable bill, stop going out with friends or cutback on things your spending money on so you can relocate that money to invest into your business.

You have to ask yourself how important is being successful and creating your own online business that will give you time and financial freedom.

If it’s truly important to you and it’s a priority then you will make whatever sacrifices you need to make.

Just so you know I’m not preaching here. I did everything I’m suggesting.

I sold my car, my playstation, my TV, stopped going out to dinner and stopped spending money on anything I didn’t need.

When I was in the Philippines for two straight years I lived super simple and invested every spare dollar I had back into my business.

Did it suck? Yes it sucked balls to be honest with you, but it was damn worth it and I would do it again if I started all over.

Now I live in a nice house, can travel when I want, buy what I want, have over $50,000 of camera and computer equipment I dreamed of years ago and I can spend my time doing what I want to do, not what someone tells me I have to do.

I’m not telling you this to brag. I’m telling you this to make you realize that success comes with a price. If you want to be successful and you don’t have many resources then you will have to sacrifice somethings and become resourceful to make what you have work for you.

So too sum this up, don’t quit your job until you have a stable income from your online business coming in consistently.

Trust me on this if you quit too soon your life is going to be filled with lots of stress and anxiety to bring money in. Take advantage of the reliable job you have because the early days of entrepreneurship are unpredictable.

The final thing I want to say on this is I would also suggest to save up a rainy day fund. I would suggest saving up at least 6-12 months of your bills and expenses just incase you hit a rough patch.

Business can be unpredictable in the early days and it’s good to have a buffer so you don’t panic and get yourself into any type of financial trouble.

3.) Manage Your Time

This is one of the most important lessons to learn if you want to build your business while you have a job, but also extremely important once you’re a full-time entrepreneur.

If you don’t learn to manage your time while you have a job, I think it’s going to be very tough for you to manage your time when you’re a full time entrepreneur.

When you have a job you have someone to hold you accountable and if you don’t do the work you will soon be fired.

When you build your own online business you must learn self discipline and be ruthless with your time.

This sometimes means not going out to hangout with friends, not watching TV shows in the evenings after work, giving up some family time and cutting back on many things that are currently consuming your time.

Time is your most valuable asset. It’s far more valuable than money. You can always make more money, but you have limited time in your lifetime so you have to make it count.

When I first started my business I had to let my family know this is important to me and it’s going to require me to be less present for a while. I stopped going out with my friends and many of them either didn’t understood or made fun of me.

What I can tell you is that you’re not missing out on anything. You may think you’re making sacrifices, but really you’re just setting yourself up to have as much fun as you want in the future.

All of my old friends are unhappy, divorced, in jobs they hate and they have many regrets and some of them even say they admire me because I made smarter choices than they did.

Some of my old friends think I got lucky, but the reality is that I chose to think about the long term pay off’s instead of focusing on living in the moment.

Most people are focused on constantly having fun and being happy all the time, but because they fail to think about their future and how their choices will affect their future, they end up miserable in the long term.

To be successful in business you have to love what you do. You don’t need to follow your passion or any of that woo woo advice, but you need to find passion and purpose in the work you’re doing.

Even when I was working my job years ago that I hated I took pride in doing my best work, showing up early, working harder than everyone else and always holding myself to a higher standard.

When you have a job you will have to be extremely disciplined and learn to use your time wisely.

People often ask me “Zach, how many hours do I need to work on my online business”.

My answer is it depends. It depends on how much you’re willing to sacrifice and how fast you want to make things happen.

For me personally I spent all my spare time I had after my job and even once I was doing freelance work on building my online business. Succeeding in business was and still is one of my biggest priorities in my life.

Even to this day I spend a lot of time working on my business because I get fulfillment and enjoyment creating and getting better at my craft.

Most people think starting an online business and creating passive income is all about doing less work and spending all their time having fun, but this is really backwards thinking.

You spend most of your adult life working in a job. When you build a business you will do the same.

If you spend all your time playing and having fun, whatever business and success you created will start to dwindle away. A business requires constant effort, attention, care and commitment to grow and have consistent income coming in.

So the sooner you learn to love the process, love learning and love working on your business the easier this will be on you.

My suggestion is to take a good look at your current life, schedule and commitments and then schedule dedicated time to work on your business.

This may mean you work just a couple hours each night after work and then work one or two days on the weekend. Everyones schedule will be different, but the important part is that you make time to work on your business.

When you sit down to work on your business you need to shut out all distractions, turn off the cell phone, lock yourself in a room away from family and only focus on working on your business.

I’ve seen people with just a couple hours each day make more money and achieve more than people with 20-30 or more hours a week. It’s because they spend their time working on their business over being busy and distracted.

You have to be ruthless with your time and focus. If you’re spending your work time by consuming other peoples content, following everyone making money and consistently getting distracted you will never make enough progress to quit your job.

When I’m working I’m not surfing social media, I’m not looking at what other people are doing online, I don’t care how much money someone talks about their making and I don’t let anyone distract me from my work.

This is how someone who works less can make more because they’re focused and not busy and unproductive.

If you’re going to be a full-time entrepreneur you have to hold yourself to a higher standard than everyone else.

You have to hold yourself accountable to do the work just like a boss would at your job.

This all starts with learning to master managing your time and create a disciplined schedule to work on your business.

Many people think if they could just quit their job then they will be successful, but I actually don’t agree with this at all.

If you fail manage your time now you will end up binging on Netflix and finding many things to consume your spare time once you quit your job and never get any work done. I know because when I first quit my job I did exactly this.

4.) Manage Your Physical And Mental Health

This is probably not what you expected me to talk about when it comes to building an online business, but it’s very important.

When you have a job you’re using a big part of your mental and sometimes physical energy throughout the day.

Many people don’t exercise or eat properly so they’re constantly feeling tired and groggy. I was always in great shape until I was about 25 because I worked out, but once I went full-time as an entrepreneur, I let my health go downhill real fast.

I was working lots of hours and I told myself I don’t have the time to eat healthy and workout, but soon I found myself 50 pounds overweight and constantly feeling tired.

If you’re working a full-time job and working on your business in the after-hours you need to be thinking about the food your putting into your body. When you eat lots of processed foods and soda and sugary food you’re going to feel tired and groggy.

In order to build a successful online business it’s going to require you to use lots of creative thinking and require a lot of mental energy. If you’re eating lots of junk food and unhealthy foods how do you expect to have the energy to build your business? It’s going to be tough!

You also want to get in some daily exercise. It can just be walking, you don’t have to go to the gym.

If you want to have more energy just exercising daily is going to give you massive improvements in your life not just the physical benefits. Whenever I miss a day of exercise I notice I have less energy, I feel a bit sluggish and I’m less productive.

The 30-60 minutes you spend exercising is going to make you 10x more productive in your business.

Now the last tip I have for increasing your energy is controlling your mental health.

Entrepreneurship comes with lots of stress, obstacles and challenges you must deal with. Many people don’t talk about this, but if you don’t work on your mental health you can end up with tons of anxiety and even depression.

When you’re working a full-time job and building a business you have a lot on your plate and your brain is going to naturally tell you this isn’t going to work, you’re not good enough and at times you will feel depressed you don’t have the results you want yet.

I highly suggest you either read daily or listen to audio books or a podcast. You want to be flooding your mind daily with good thoughts, inspiration from other people who have done what you want to achieve or anything that keeps you in good spirits and inspired to work on your business.

This is something you need to do every day to prepare yourself to go to war with yourself. The only person who will stop you from being successful is yourself. You have to be able to battle your brain when those negative thoughts kick in. If you don’t work on your personal development and training yourself to get mentally tough, you will buy into those negative thoughts and give up and quit.

Your mind should be treated just like your body. You have to feed your mind with all the good stuff so you can be operating and functioning on all cylinders. Most people are very emotionally unbalanced and they react to every challenge or obstacle they are hit with.

A successful entrepreneur learns to use logic and always ask themselves how do I solve this problem or who can help me solve this problem. The only way to develop this type of mindset to dominate is to train your brain daily just like you would train your body in the gym.

In business you’re going to constantly have to stretch outside of your comfort zone to get to that next level. You’re going to have to break down your mental muscles and rebuild them stronger just like a muscle.

I personally believe business is 90% mindset and 10% how to’s. If you work on your mind daily you will find you can handle more challenges and overcome more obstacles and eventually you will dominate everything you want to pursue in life.

5.) Be Consistent Until You Get The Result

My final tip is simply to be consistent. I see so many people quit after just a week or month of doing work because they don’t have a result.

It blows my mind because people will go to college for four years, put themselves in massive debt and then work years to climb the corporate ladder, but they quit after 30 days starting a business.

This is where the short term versus long term thinking comes into play.

If you want to be successful with any business you must sacrifice short term pleasure and instant gratification for a better future.

I see so many people start something and then they see someone saying another business model is easier so they jump ship trying to avoid doing the hard work. They convince themselves they will find something easier that doesn’t require learning skills and they think they won’t face obstacles with the new business.

With every business it’s going to require time, money and massive commitment on your part. You will have a learning curve, need to learn new skills to make the business successful and you have to work through the obstacles.

The reason only a small percentage of people are successful is because they understand the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence. The grass is green wherever you choose to water it.

So to sum things up you need to pick your business model and focus on mastering the skills and getting just 1% better daily. Stick to that business until you get the result and delete your plan B.

Successful people understand no business or opportunity is perfect. You have so many opportunities to become a millionaire these days because of the internet, but you have to pick one and focus everything you have inside of you until you get the result you want.

Most people are distracted and they can’t stop themselves from following everyone who makes money, consuming endless information and confusing themselves.

I will leave you with this last thought. You will only get confused when you allow yourself to get confused. If you choose to consume on purpose and only consume what you need to learn to be successful and take consistent action until you get the result you want, it’s impossible to fail.

The only people who fail are the people who allow themselves to get distracted or quit. So with knowing that all you have to do to be successful is choose to be focused. It’s really that simple.

With that being said, I hope you got value from this video and I would love to hear what you think in the comments below. If you haven’t subscribed to my channel make sure to do that now and I will see you in the next video.
